Decision record · 2026-10-12
Leave a working server alone.
Context
I could rebuild my always-on server on the operating system my day job runs on: more practice, one distro everywhere.
Options
A · Rejected
Rebuild on my day job's OS.
Feasible: drivers, containers and runtimes all checked out. Cost: a weekend reinstall, evenings of porting config, and every verification redone.
B · Chose
Stay on the current OS.
Nothing changes. Open maintenance items get done on the current install.
Why
- 01Nothing on the machine was broken.
- 02A rebuild resets confidence to zero without adding capability.
- 03The skills argument is already served by a lab box that exists to be experimented on.
What would make me reconsider
The next planned OS upgrade, or a failure a different OS would actually fix. Not curiosity.
Outcome
No action taken. Sometimes the best action is no action.
